Help for Depression...

Many people use the term ‘depression’ to describe feeling down or lethargic or occasionally sad. These sorts of feelings tend to pass relatively quickly. In contrast however, diagnosed depression can be a serious disorder which requires professional help. Depression will not only affect ones mood but also sleeping and eating. It may also affect the way they feel about themselves.

People with depression often feel isolated, sad, helpless and hopeless about the future. These feelings do not simply shake off but are persistent in nature and usually severe. The frequency and intensity of these feelings distinguish them from more general emotions.

It is not unusual for depressive illness to begin in adolescence or early adulthood. For many, the disorder can be undetected for many years, for this reason people may not realise they have a disorder and that it is treatable.
Depression responds well to psychological therapy but this can take some time especially if the individual has had symptoms for a significant period of time.

Possible Symptoms

The Symptoms of depression include at least five or all of the following and have endured for a continuous period of at least two weeks:

Sad mood
Feelings of worthlessness
Feelings of helplessness
Loss of pleasure or interest in activities that were previously enjoyed
Low energy; low motivation
Poor concentration
Repeated thoughts of deliberate self-harm or suicide
Changes in sleep pattern and appetite, weight loss or gain
Physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomach aches

Treatment

Depression can be treated successfully. Psychological therapy offers people the opportunity to highlight factors that contribute to their depression. Therapy will support the person in finding effective ways to manage their symptoms.

We may identify negative or distorted thinking patterns that regularly get in the way of normal living. Together we will look at options for the future and set realistic goals to help improve mental and emotional well being.
